Hundreds of Githambo Tea Factory farmers in Murang’a county who were demonstrating demanding better annual bonuses payment for the crop were Tear-gassed by anti-riot police officers this morning.
The farmers decided to organize peaceful demonstrations to demand payment of Ksh. 60 per kilogram of tea as promised by the factory management.
Yesterday the management had increased the payment from Ksh. 42 per kilo gram of tea to Ksh. 49 per kg of tea but the farmers have declined the payment demanding the payment be increased to 60 as area promised.

“We were promised that we shall be paid Ksh. 60 per kilogramme of tea, but we are shocked when the factory management released Ksh. 42 and then added the payment to Ksh. 49 when we protested. Our chairman Joseph Karanu assured us that we will receive Ksh. 60, we want that payment now,” said Maina

“We demand the government to intervene and ensure we are paid what rightfully belongs to the farmers. It’s sad the factory management has resulted to using police officers to thwart our protests. We shall continue with the protests until we are paid our dues,” noted Susan
