Celebrating Kikuyu Benga Maestro Timona Mburu Kareko

Timona Mburu Kareko, born in Rwaitira, Gatunyu, Gatanga, Murang’a County, is the fourth of eight siblings. His musical journey began at an early age, influenced by the renowned DK Wamaria.

Timona’s debut recording, “Kai Utakiugaga Kwaheri,” was released in 1982. He first gained prominence as a member of John Ndichu’s Rwengo Brothers, alongside Joseph Wamumbe, Kimani Thomas, and Makibi James. After the band’s dissolution, Timona joined the New Gatanga Boys, which included Waithaka Mboce, Wamumbe, and Kimani Thomas.

Timona’s notable hits include “Nguruneti,” “Urethuathua,” “Jarufeta,” “Ndutura Karimu,” “Wi Sumu,” “Mugekenyi wa Haramu,” and “Gikuu kia Wanjira.” He was also featured as one of the emissaries in Queen Jane’s song, “Ndagutumira Aini.” Following Queen Jane’s marriage to Kariuki, Timona honored the occasion with the song “Queen ya Kariuki.”

A mentor to the late John Dematthew, Timona played a key role in the recording of Dematthew’s first song, “Janiffer.” Known for his careful approach to music, Timona typically releases new songs every five years.

Recently, Timona celebrated his 40th anniversary in the music industry with a grand event that attracted numerous fans and admirers.
