The Legendary Wamugumo of Nyeri
Wangibu Wanyang’arua, popularly known as Wamugumo, was a revered seer in the Kikuyu community of Kenya. Standing approximately 8 feet tall, he was not only known for his remarkable predictions, which many believed came true, but also for his imposing physical presence. Despite his stature, Wamugumo shunned material wealth and preferred to be compensated in kind, often carrying a large bag to collect his earnings.
His nickname, Wamugumo, was inspired by a massive Mugumo (Fig) tree located in his compound, symbolizing both his and the tree’s impressive size. It was said that when he thrust his spear into the ground, it took several men to pull it out, but he could easily remove it with one arm.
A memorable incident occurred when Wamugumo was charged with killing a bull. During his court hearing, he was sentenced to a caning. Wamugumo dismissed the punishment with a laugh, asserting that a grown man should not be caned like a child, and challenged anyone to try. The crowd’s enthusiastic support for him led the magistrate to release him, fearing further unrest.
Despite his fearsome reputation, Wamugumo was known for his gentle nature. He often wore jingles on his feet that announced his approach, prompting children to chant, “ciririririririri Wamugumo!” in excitement.
Though Wamugumo has passed away, his legacy endures, a testament to his enduring fame and influence. As our community says, “Fame is greater than the owner.” Wangibu Wanyang’arua remains a true legend of the past.
