James Kinyua Wairatu, the director of Maono Lands Limited, has made a remarkable transformation from his modest beginnings as a shoe shiner to becoming one of Kenya’s leading real estate entrepreneurs.
Raised in a poverty-stricken family, Kinyua’s early life was fraught with hardship. “Some of us came from the poorest of families in the neighborhood. Life was so hard that we could not imagine that one day we would be where we are today,” Kinyua reflected. Despite these challenges, his determination to succeed remained unwavering.
After completing his studies, Kinyua supported his family by mending shoes, a humble job that instilled in him a strong work ethic. Known in his community and on the radio as “Kinyua Wairatu Washoes,” his reputation as a shoemaker was matched by his engaging presence on air.

Kinyua’s time in media opened doors to new opportunities. He leveraged his growing network and took on a marketing role with a land-selling company targeting the coastal region. His success in this role spurred him to invest in land in Malindi, laying the groundwork for his future ventures.
Driven by a vision to create something substantial, Kinyua founded Maono Lands Limited. His innovative approach and networking skills propelled the company to prominence. Today, Maono Lands is a multi-million-dollar enterprise with extensive land holdings across Kenya.
In addition to his real estate achievements, Kinyua has made his mark in publishing as the editor of Shabik Magazine and serves as the chair of the Association of Real Estate Stakeholders in Kenya.
