In a candid interview on Inooro TV’s Inooro Ruciini show, Nyeri County Speaker James Gichuhi Mwangi disclosed the contentious process that led to the selection of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as President William Ruto’s running mate during the 2022 general elections.

Gichuhi revealed that Ruto had initially reached out to leaders from the Mt. Kenya region, asking them to propose a candidate for the deputy position. At the time, Gachagua was serving as the Member of Parliament for Mathira. However, the selection process was marred by disagreements, notably from Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, who led opposition against Gachagua’s nomination.

“One day, President Ruto asked Rigathi to come along with his spouse for an announcement,” Gichuhi recounted. Despite this, tensions escalated, primarily driven by Ichung’wah’s objections. The situation became so fraught that the initial plan to name Gachagua was abandoned in favor of a ballot decision.

Gichuhi alleged that financial incentives were offered to sway support towards other candidates, including Kithure Kindiki and Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru. He noted that some leaders preferred a “soft leader” over the firm and resolute Gachagua.

“Others felt that since Raila Odinga had selected Martha Karua as his running mate, it was crucial to choose someone as steadfast as Rigathi,” he explained.

Ultimately, Ruto remained committed to Gachagua’s candidacy. On the day of the announcement, Gichuhi claimed that Ichung’wah spent much of his time in a hotel, attempting to rally opposition against Gachagua’s selection. However, as it became clear that Ruto would proceed with the nomination, Ichung’wah and other dissenters attended the ceremony.

Gichuhi also highlighted that during this pivotal moment, Kithure Kindiki was conspicuously absent, reportedly switching off his phone to avoid participation in the process.

This revelation adds another layer to the political dynamics of the 2022 elections, illustrating the complexities and rivalries within the Mt. Kenya leadership circle.
