Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, through his foundation, has officially launched the Smart Toto Clubs alongside the distribution of fortified uji flour as part of the Uji Wa Afya Programme.
The Smart Toto Clubs are designed as interactive, inclusive, and educational spaces for primary school children. Club coordinators will focus on fostering a reading culture among students by organizing book club days featuring donated storybooks. Additionally, students will learn responsibility through the adoption and care of fruit seedlings until maturity, while performing focus groups will receive appraisals to encourage motivation.
The primary aim of these clubs is to cultivate a strong reading culture, address mental health issues affecting children, and promote a sense of responsibility in nurturing holistic development. The clubs facilitate open dialogues in a child-friendly environment, coordinated by trained facilitators.
With a reach spanning across 30 wards in Nyeri County, the foundation also introduced Smart Teen Clubs for secondary school students, tailored to address the unique challenges faced by adolescents through similar concepts and engaging activities.
The Wamatinga Foundation will conduct reviews to monitor each club’s progress, enabling the assessment of their impact on students, schools, and the broader community.
Senator Wamatinga emphasized the importance of demystifying stigma and misconceptions surrounding children’s mental wellness and wellbeing, encouraging collective efforts to support the youth in their development.
