Nyeri High Court has blocked the reopening of boarding facility at Hillside Endarasha Academy, citing concerns over the safety and health of pupils.
The decision came after a petition filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), David Karani, and the Elimu Bora Working Group.
The petitioners moved to court on Monday, arguing that the school was not ready to house students. We told the court that the institution had rushed to reopen without implementing the necessary safety measures.
The petition follows a fire on September 5 that tragically claimed the lives of 21 pupils.
While the school, which operates as both a day and boarding facility, resumed classes on Wednesday, the court today ordered the boarding section to remain closed.
The court also certified the petition urgent because “the best interest of the children is at stake.”
