Celebrating the Legacy of Kihara Wa Gathua, A Voice That Will Be Missed
The sun has set on a remarkable chapter in Kikuyu media with the passing of Kihara Wa Gathua, a beloved media personality and a steadfast voice for his community. Kihara, who hailed from Kamiruri village in Kieni constituency, Nyeri County, breathed his last at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the hearts of many.
A Journey Through Media
Kihara studied Media at the Consolata Institute of Communication and Technology in Mathari, Nyeri, where he honed the skills that would define his illustrious career. His education laid a strong foundation for a lifetime of storytelling and engagement with his audience.
Kihara’s journey began in 2003 when he took the helm of the news department at Inooro FM, a station that would become a cornerstone of Kikuyu broadcasting. His deep, captivating voice became a signature that listeners eagerly tuned in for, introduced by his memorable phrase, “nî Inooro Hwa-ini Niî njîtagwo Kihara Wa Gathua.” For 15 years, he shaped the station’s news landscape, informing and engaging his audience with integrity and passion.
In 2018, Kihara ventured into new territory by founding Iganjo FM, owned by Kirinyaga businessman Andrew Ngirichi. He continued to innovate and inspire, launching Gichichio FM owned by Murang’a politician Mwangi Wa Iria, and later Kayu FM. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his dedication to the craft, illustrating his unwavering commitment to serving the community through media.
A Personal Touch
Kihara was not just a broadcaster; he was a storyteller, a confidant, and a friend to many. His authenticity shone through in every broadcast, and his ability to connect with listeners made him a cherished figure in the Kikuyu community. He was a man of faith, having once aspired to become a priest, and remained a devoted Catholic throughout his life.
His passing has left a profound impact on those who knew him. His sister, Wanjiku Wa Francis, captured the sentiment beautifully on Facebook, expressing, “My brother Kihara Gathua😢😢Nianze wapi saasa.. Dear God we accept your will. It is well.”
Colleagues and friends echoed this sentiment, with Ephraim Antony Mugo remembering him as a “close friend and confidant” who fought valiantly in life, and Zulu Thiong’o reflecting on the devastation felt across the media landscape.
A Legacy of Love
Kihara Wa Gathua’s legacy is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to his community. His contributions to Kikuyu media will be remembered for generations, as will the warmth and love he shared with those around him. As Dickson Ndirangu poignantly stated, “Heartbroken!! Our brother and friend Kihara Gathua has passed away. Safe travels.”
As the community mourns the loss of Kihara, it also celebrates his life—a life dedicated to service, storytelling, and connection. His voice may have fallen silent, but the echoes of his influence will continue to resonate in the lives he touched. Kihara Wa Gathua will forever be remembered not just as a media personality, but as a beacon of hope and a champion of the Kikuyu spirit. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
