A recent survey by Timely Kenya, conducted from October 12 to 16, shows that 48% of Kenyans support Professor Kithure Kindiki as a potential replacement for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if he is impeached.

The poll indicates that a substantial majority—79.16% of respondents—believe the Senate will ultimately move to impeach Gachagua, despite his legal team’s efforts to defend him. Only 17.5% oppose the impeachment, while 1.9% remain undecided.

Several factors contribute to the widespread belief in Gachagua’s impending impeachment. Many respondents cited a sense of inevitability, significant allegations supported by evidence, and personal grudges some senators may hold against him.

Support for the impeachment motion is particularly strong in Nyanza (87%), North Eastern (86.6%), Rift Valley (86%), Eastern (81.5%), Coast (79%), Nairobi (76%), Western (72%), and Central (69%). Conversely, opponents argue that there is insufficient evidence to support the allegations and that Gachagua has secured enough political backing from key senators.

The survey also identified potential successors to Gachagua, with Kindiki emerging as the preferred choice for 48% of participants. Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi were mentioned by 5% of respondents each, followed by Governor Anne Waiguru (4%) and Governors Irungu Kang’ata and Gladys Wanga (3% each).

Timely Kenya noted that Kindiki’s strong public service track record, commitment to effective governance, and non-tribal, results-oriented approach contributed to his popularity. Nyoro was acknowledged for his economic insight and youthful appeal, while Mudavadi was seen as moderate and experienced. However, Waiguru’s candidacy faced skepticism due to her past involvement in the NYS scandal, despite considerations for gender representation in leadership roles, as promised by President William Ruto.
