In a poignant moment just hours before her untimely death, 14-year-old Angeline Kirigo Kinyua spoke to her parents on Friday evening at 7 PM. Using her teacher’s mobile phone, she shared her excitement about an upcoming family celebration for her elder sister’s graduation from Strathmore University. They eagerly discussed plans for a joyful gathering after the school break, filled with love and anticipation.
“That evening, she was in such a jovial mood. I can still hear them saying ‘I love you’ to each other,” noted Kinyua Kande, father of the deceased.
But the family’s world shattered just hours later. At 2:30 AM, Gladys Muchire, Angeline’s mother, received a chilling call from the school. Her heart raced as she was told that her daughter was gravely ill and needed urgent medical attention. Arriving at the school, her worst fears were confirmed: Angeline had been rushed to Othaya Level 4 Sub-County Hospital.
A harrowing WhatsApp message from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chair revealed that a fellow student had noticed something was gravely wrong with Angeline in the dormitory. The Matron and Principal quickly mobilized to rush her to the hospital, but tragically, she passed away around 4 AM on Saturday.
Family members who rushed to the scene were left with overwhelming grief and confusion, questioning whether Angeline had died at school or in the hospital. Allegations of a cover-up loomed, casting a shadow over the tragedy.
“I asked the doctor why he couldn’t write a report on how my child died. He told me he couldn’t do it because she arrived here already gone,” added Jecinta
Attempts to reach the principal of Mahiga Girls, Franciscar Wahome, for comments went unanswered.
Further complicating the family’s anguish, a WhatsApp message revealed that Angeline had been unwell since September 8, when her parents took her from school for treatment. She returned to school but fell ill again, leading her parents to take her back to the hospital on October 15.
“Imagine finding out about your daughter’s death through a WhatsApp text, just like everyone else,” wondered the father.
Now, the family is left grappling with unimaginable loss and a thirst for answers. They are calling for a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding Angeline’s tragic death.
“While I cannot bring my daughter back, I deserve to know every detail about what happened, from the moment she fell ill to her last breaths.” noted Kinyua Kande, father of the deceased
Currently, Angeline’s young body lies in the mortuary at Mary Immaculate Hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination. The pain of this loss hangs heavy, a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the desperate need for accountability.
