As the term of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga approaches its conclusion in 2027, the race for the gubernatorial seat is becoming increasingly defined, with a section of observers labeling it a “one-horse race.”
This shift in dynamics has been significantly influenced by the recent impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which has reshaped the political landscape in the county.
Currently, two prominent figures have shown interest in the powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary position.
Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga and TND party leader Thuo Mathenge, both of whom have garnered online support from influencers advocating for their appointment to the powerful CS docket.
Following Gachagua’s impeachment by the National Assembly a few weeks ago, social media has been abuzz with pro-Wamatinga and pro-Mathenge content, pushing for their appointment to the cabinet.
However, with Wamatinga’s controversial vote to impeach Gachagua, he faces a formidable challenge in convincing Nyeri voters to support him as the next governor, particularly given that Nyeri is Gachagua’s political stronghold. His political maneuvering will be closely scrutinized, and the sentiment among voters remains uncertain.
On the other hand, Thuo Mathenge’s potential candidacy for the gubernatorial seat poses another layer of complexity. Should he be selected for a Cabinet Secretary position, it could pave the way for John Mwangi Munyiri, popularly known as Johny, a youthful and vocal newcomer to the political scene, to seize the opportunity for the governorship. Johny has been actively campaigning across the county, promoting the need for youthful leadership.
Johny’s campaign is driven by his slogan, “Mundu atongaga rika rîake rîathana,” which loosely translates to “A person gets rich when his/her age mates get into leadership.” This message resonates with many young voters who are eager for change and the elevation of youth voices in governance.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Johny is positioning himself as a viable alternative, emphasizing the importance of youth participation in leadership roles ahead of the 2027 elections.
With nearly three years until the general elections, the Nyeri gubernatorial race remains fluid, and only time will reveal how these dynamics will unfold in the months to come.
