Nyeri is mourning the loss of Charles Nderitu, a beloved media personality better known as Maina Gathu, who passed away early this morning. He had been receiving treatment at Mathari Mission Hospital in Nyeri for over a month, leaving friends and colleagues devastated by the news.

Before his role as the personal assistant to former Nyeri Governor Samuel Wamathai, Gathu made significant contributions to journalism, working with the Citizen Weekly newspaper. His dedication to the craft of storytelling and his keen insights into local issues garnered him a loyal following.

Gathu’s commitment to public service was evident during his tenure as Wamathai’s personal assistant, especially when Wamathai assumed office following the untimely death of Nyeri’s first governor, Nderitu Gachagua, in February 2017. In the years leading up to his passing, he was actively involved with the e-newspaper Wembe, where his passion for journalism continued to shine through.

Throughout his career, Maina Gathu was known for his engaging personality and commitment to uplifting the voices of the Nyeri residents. His contributions to local media and his role in governance have left an indelible mark on many.

As tributes pour in from fans and fellow media practitioners, the legacy of Gathu will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the hearts of those he touched. The community of Nyeri has lost a true champion, and he will be deeply missed.
