Renowned Kenyan lawyer and advocate for women’s rights, Judy Thongori, has died, her family has confirmed. Thongori passed away on Tuesday evening after a brief illness.
Her family revealed that she fell seriously ill last week and was subsequently flown to India for treatment, where she ultimately succumbed.
With over three decades of experience in family law, Thongori was lauded for her commitment to championing gender equality. Notably, she famously sued the Kenyan government for failing to meet the constitutional mandate of 30 percent women’s representation in leadership roles.
In 2023, she was appointed to a presidential task force tasked with reviewing the religious sector, following the shocking discovery of over 400 bodies in Shakahola Forest.
Thongori was an active member of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and shared a close friendship with Chief Justice Martha Koome.
The Law Society of Kenya expressed deep sorrow at her passing, describing her as a “beacon of excellence” with significant contributions to the legal profession. LSK President Faith Odhiambo stated, “Her noteworthy contributions to family law and human rights are timeless and continue to propagate a learning curve for many in the profession. The legacy she leaves behind will remain an indelible mark of her impact that lives on among us.”
