Maria Wangari Kamunge, known as TikToker Rish Kamunge, has been granted a Ksh. 5 million bond following her arrest on fraud charges. Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina issued the ruling on Friday morning.
Kamunge’s defense team opposed the bond application and requested an additional seven days to complete their investigations. However, Magistrate Onyina determined that the prosecution did not provide sufficient reasons for her continued detention.
Police reports indicate that multiple complaints against Kamunge were filed between January 1 and March 20, 2025. Victims allege they were instructed to send money via M-Pesa to a number registered in her name, but after failing to secure the promised jobs, they discovered she had gone into hiding.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that 43 victims collectively sent Ksh. 12.9 million to Kamunge. She was apprehended on March 26, 2025, in a Nairobi office building by members of the public, who then turned her over to the Central Police Station.
Since her arrest, more victims have come forward with similar allegations, prompting the DCI to seek an extension of her custody.
