The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced a significant restructuring of the Ruringu Stadium project, reducing its capacity from 20,000 to 15,000 seats at a revised cost of Sh 850 million.
During a recent tour of the stalled facility, which has been inactive since 2017 following its launch by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya confirmed that construction will now be managed by a contractor under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Mvurya addressed concerns over the project’s delays, stating that the new design will ensure the stadium is a prototype capable of hosting CHAN games.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who joined Mvurya on the site visit, emphasized the importance of completing the stadium, insisting it should not be used as a political tool during President William Ruto’s upcoming tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
Local legislator Duncan Mathenge hailed the project’s progress as a major milestone after three years of advocacy, noting that military oversight will ensure discipline in construction.
Last February, during a visit to the area, President Ruto pledged that the stadium would be completed by December 2024. Mvurya has now indicated that the construction timeline is estimated to be between 8 to 12 months.
