Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out about the ongoing efforts by certain leaders to have him removed from office. During an interview on Friday, he attributed the attacks against him to his commitment to truthfulness and accountability.

Gachagua claimed that some leaders have been coerced into opposing him and alleged that there are individuals paying others to orchestrate his ouster. “They say I’m high-headed and too focused on the people, that I listen to their concerns too much. I don’t believe it is a crime to listen to Kenyans,” he stated in an interview with Citizen TV.

Emphasizing the importance of responsiveness in leadership, Gachagua asserted that it is the duty of leaders to heed the voices of the citizens who elected them. “Leadership is about the people. To be a good leader, you must listen to them. Today, I’m wiser than I was in the morning because I choose to engage with the people,” he said, encouraging those dissatisfied with him to voice their concerns directly to the Kenyan public, whom he refers to as his “employer.”

Gachagua’s remarks come amid increasing political isolation and the looming threat of an impeachment motion against him. He has sought to counter this by connecting with voters through public rallies. Speaking at a roadside event at Wakulima Market in Nairobi, he reiterated that he was elected by the Kenyan people, not by MPs, and insisted that only the citizens have the power to remove him from office.
