In a recent interview on Citizen TV, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua addressed ongoing tensions between himself and President William Ruto, highlighting a troubling pattern of disrespect from the President’s allies. Gachagua’s remarks suggest a growing rift in the Kenya Kwanza administration, as he recalled a similar situation during Ruto’s tenure as Deputy President under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During the 2022 campaign, Ruto vowed to protect his deputy from the humiliation he had experienced, stating, “If I am elected President, my deputy will not be demeaned or disrespected.” However, Gachagua contended that Ruto has not upheld this promise, as he faces increasing criticism just two years into their administration.

“It appears there’s a jinx surrounding the Deputy President’s office,” Gachagua remarked, comparing his struggles to Ruto’s past experiences. “While Ruto had five years to navigate his challenges, I have only had one year, and my situation is worse.”

Gachagua urged Ruto to fulfill his commitment to protect him from attacks by fellow government officials, including Cabinet Secretaries. “Today, the Deputy President is being abused, and the President remains silent. This is a promise that requires no financial resources—just the will to be a gentleman and honor his word,” Gachagua asserted.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the Deputy President’s comments may signal deeper issues within the current administration.
