During her statement at the CSW69 High-Level Interactive Dialogue with Regional Commissions, State Department for Gender Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe emphasized Kenya’s commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls globally.
Addressing delegates at the United Nations Headquarters, Wang’ombe highlighted the necessity of breaking the gender poverty gap by ensuring women have equal access to land, property, and technology, particularly in rural areas. She outlined Kenya’s ongoing efforts to mobilize domestic resources and strengthen progressive taxation systems aimed at fostering equitable wealth distribution.
Wang’ombe noted significant strides in achieving gender parity in education, particularly at lower levels, while acknowledging the need to bridge the transition to higher education. “Our focus remains on enhancing digital literacy, improving infrastructure, and closing the gender digital divide,” she stated.
On the critical issue of gender-based violence (GBV), Wang’ombe reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to eradicating stigma, violence, and harmful stereotypes. She announced the establishment of a Task Force on GBV, which includes measures addressing femicide, aimed at strengthening laws and policies that protect women and girls. The PS also stressed the importance of securing adequate funding for high-quality GBV prevention and response services, highlighting Policare, Kenya’s one-stop center for GBV counseling and support, which continues to assist survivors.
Additionally, Wang’ombe acknowledged the role of men as allies in achieving gender equality, emphasizing the inclusion of men in the national agenda. She reiterated the commitment to ensuring women’s representation at all levels of defense and security.
Regarding climate action, she called for increased funding for women- and youth-led initiatives to enhance access to climate finance.
In closing, Wang’ombe urged unity in the global efforts to create a more inclusive future for women and girls, reinforcing the vision of a brighter tomorrow driven by shared commitments to gender equality.
