Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has shared the inspiring story behind his distinctive name, “Wamatinga.” In a recent media interview, the Nyeri senator explained that he received the name from his technical institute, which focused on training individuals in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Wamatinga’s journey began with the founding of his first company, which led to the establishment of several branches, significantly raising his profile in the community. He noted that after spending 20 years in Germany, he recognized a significant skills gap in Kenya’s workforce.
“We often see parents sending their children to university to earn degrees without ensuring they acquire employable skills,” he remarked.
This realization prompted him to start a company, only to discover a lack of skilled labor available for hire.
To address this issue, he founded the Institute of Applied Technology, which welcomed students regardless of their previous qualifications, as long as they were at least 18 years old and had an identification card.
“When the superhighway was being constructed, you might have seen young women operating heavy machinery—many of them were my trainees,” Wamatinga proudly recalls
His institute has successfully helped many individuals secure employment abroad, including in Israel and Qatar, during the construction of stadiums.
As his work gained recognition, he opened additional branches in Karatina and Nakuru, leading people to refer to him as “Wahome Wa Matinga.” He embraced this nickname, feeling it symbolized his achievements and contributions to the community.
Reflecting on his journey, Wamatinga expressed pride in the lasting impact he has made, stating that his efforts have paved the way for the emergence of other industries. Despite facing discouragement from friends when he first started his company, he persevered and continues to inspire others through his work.
