Media personality Joy Wa Macharia is making waves as one of the most prominent figures in Kikuyu radio, captivating audiences with her vibrant personality and dynamic shows. As the host of the drive show on Inooro FM, she boasts an impressive following of nearly 1 million on Facebook, making her a household name in the region.

Joy, who hails from Murang’a County, is not just a radio queen but also a celebrated Mugithi star. Her YouTube channel has over 122,000 subscribers, and every Friday night, her Mugithi show on Inooro TV draws in fans eager for her infectious energy and lively performances.

Before her stint at Inooro FM, which began in April this year, Joy dedicated a decade to Coro FM, where she became an integral part of the station’s identity. Her journey in journalism began humbly at Radio Maria in Murang’a, a Catholic Church-sponsored station.

“Journalism was my childhood passion, and it was a sweet surprise to be admitted to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) for my Diploma in Mass Communication,” Joy shared with Nyeri Mohoro Newshub.

Joy’s path was not without challenges and she had to work hard to make her passion come true, reflecting on the sacrifices she made as a student from a humble background. The support of industry mentor Nyoxx wa Katta, who offered her a place to stay while she sought her big break, was invaluable. Nyoxx became a mother figure to her during those tough times.

Despite the struggles, Joy found her voice at Coro FM, where she hosted a variety of shows, including the beloved Friday night Mugithi program. Her talent extends beyond radio; she is also a gifted singer, known for her engaging performances at entertainment venues across the region.

Joy burst onto the music scene with her hit song “Mundurume Kieya,” which playfully explores the hidden depths of seemingly simple men. The track, which has garnered over 2.7 million views on YouTube, has become an anthem in the Mt. Kenya region.

Her other popular songs include “Cuma Hiu,” “Waitherero Kia Murang’a,” and “Ndukone ta Ukinyite,” showcasing her versatility and appeal in the music industry.

Born in Iyego village as the second of four children, Joy attended local schools, including Njii Ithatu and Gitugi Girls Secondary. Now married with two children, her colleagues describe her as a “package of big heart, joy, and down-to-earth spirit,” highlighting her ability to connect with others effortlessly.

As Joy Wa Macharia continues to rise in prominence, she remains a shining example of perseverance and passion in the competitive world of media and music, inspiring many along the way.
