President William Ruto has nominated former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe as the new Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock. The announcement was made in a dispatch on Thursday, December 19, by Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service.
Mutahi Kagwe, born in January 1958, is a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, known for his significant contributions to the nation’s political and public health sectors. His political career began in 2002 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mukurweini Constituency under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC). During his tenure, he chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Trade, Tourism, and Planning.
Kagwe’s leadership abilities led to his appointment as Minister for Information and Communications in the Kibaki administration. He played a crucial role in the launch of Kenya’s groundbreaking mobile money transfer system, M-Pesa, and in the construction of the East African Marine System (T.E.A.M.S), the first fiber optic project for Eastern Africa.
From 2013 to 2017, Kagwe served as the first senator for Nyeri County, actively participating in various committees, including chairing the Senate Committee on Education. His advocacy for early childhood education contributed to the development of “The Best Classroom” program, aimed at enhancing educational quality across the nation.
In addition to his political roles, Kagwe has held leadership positions in the private sector, including serving as the commercial director at Standard Media Group and owning a public relations firm and an independent publishing house. He is also a member of several professional organizations, including the Marketing Society of Kenya and the Kenya Institute of Management.
Kagwe holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Nairobi and the United States International University (USIU), having completed his early education at Kihate Primary School and Kagumo High School.
Throughout his career, Kagwe has been recognized for his service, receiving the title of Elder of the Golden Heart from the President of Kenya for his distinguished contributions. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic has left a lasting impact, underscoring his commitment to public health and effective governance.
