The story of Osman Allu begins in 1894, when Osman himself arrived in Kenya, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge gleaned from his years as a salesman and bookkeeper for the renowned merchant, Allidina Visram. It was through this apprenticeship that Osman developed a keen understanding of business operations, a skill that would serve him well in his future endeavors.
In 1901, alongside his business partner Mohamedally Ratansi, Osman ventured into the burgeoning town of Nyeri, where a railway station was being established by European settlers. Seizing the opportunity, they opened their first shop, marking the beginning of a legacy that would transcend generations. Their entrepreneurial journey didn’t stop there; they established a sawmill in Karatina, supplying essential railway sleepers for the tracks extending to Nanyuki, and another shop in Muranga, then known as Fort Hall.

Osman Allu’s contributions to the Nyeri community extended far beyond commerce. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of key local institutions, including the Catholic Consolata Mission Hospital and Tumutumu Hospital. In the 1920s, he was instrumental in founding an Indian School and the present-day Nyeri Mosque, showcasing his commitment to the welfare and education of the community.
In 1945, as Osman moved to Nairobi with part of his family, he entrusted the shop’s management to his son, Abdul, ensuring that the family legacy continued to thrive. Today, the Osman Allu Shop remains a testament to the family’s dedication and hard work.
