In a candid interview with Citizen TV, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shared insights into his evolving views on Raila Odinga and the dynamics of Kenyan politics.

Gachagua stated, “It’s only a fool who doesn’t change his mind.” Reflecting on his past stance during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, he recounted how he and others were persuaded that including Raila Odinga in government would destabilize the leadership. At the time, William Ruto, then Deputy President, convinced them not to support the idea.

However, Gachagua noted a significant shift in perspective since Ruto assumed the presidency. “He sat us down and convinced us that Raila Odinga in government is good for the country,” he said, explaining that this prompted him to stop attacking Odinga.

He acknowledged the influence of Uhuru Kenyatta, whom he referred to as “our son” and “my brother,” stating that Kenyatta had also endorsed Odinga, calling him a “good man.”

“We were very brutal with Uhuru Kenyatta when he told us Raila was a good man,” noted Rigathi

He expressed regret for the insults directed at the former president. He apologized for the disrespect shown to Kenyatta and acknowledged his position as “the undisputed king of the Mountain.”

Gachagua further declared his commitment to unity among the Kikuyu, Embu, and Meru communities, asserting that attempts to divide them are “an exercise in futility.”

“The people of the Mountain are one and will never agree to be divided by anyone,” added Gachagua
